Procedures
All joint implant procedures performed are carried out with strict aseptic surgical technique including high air exchange closed operating theatres, full exhaust operating suites, prophylactic intravenous antibiotics, strict aseptic surgical technique with maximum "no touch" practice, preoperative washing of the limb, intraoperative aqueous based iodine antiseptic with use of "InteguSeal" prior to incision. Copious irrigation lavage with water pick is used intraoperatively and tourniquet times minimised, usually inflated for the purposes of cementation during total knee replacements.
Our philosophy is one of rapid return to function with minimal disturbance of the patient's physiology. That means we encourage mobilisation following partial or total joint replacement procedures, either on the same day or the next day after surgery with discharge from hospital planned within twenty-four hours for partial joint replacement and within five days for total joint replacement procedures. All patients are registered on a preoperative database for evaluation long term. The effectiveness of all joint replacement procedures are constantly monitored and compared with what is current best practice throughout the world. Professor Neil only performs hip and knee procedures which are outlined in detail under each individual heading.
